Yemen Pushes Global Crude Benchmarks Above Hundred Dollars

Escalating maritime hostilities in the Red Sea have shattered psychological price barriers, driving global crude benchmarks past the hundred-dollar mark. Simultaneously, Russian policymakers are advancing domestic export bans to shield their internal markets from these external inflationary shocks.

Global market

Following intensified attacks by Yemeni Houthi forces on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, Brent crude futures breached the $100 threshold for the first time in two months, reaching an intraday peak of $101.01 per barrel. This spreading Middle Eastern supply crisis has fundamentally altered the liquefied natural gas market, prompting European and Asian importers to demand lower prices and increased contract flexibility from traditionally dominant suppliers like Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Capitalizing on the widening global petroleum deficit, India is aggressively ramping up its refined product shipments. According to commodity analysts at Kpler, Indian exports of light and middle distillates are projected to nearly double from May levels, reaching a record 1.55 million barrels per day in July. Simultaneously, to secure long-term domestic baseload power, Indian Atomic Energy Minister Jitendra Singh announced strategic plans to construct five small modular nuclear reactors by 2033.

Russia & CIS

To insulate the domestic economy from surging global energy costs, the Russian government is actively discussing a six-month extension of its gasoline export ban and a one-month extension for diesel shipments. Meanwhile, Western economic pressure continues to crystallize; the European Union officially codified a $44 per barrel price cap on Russian oil for the next year as part of its 21st sanctions package.

Corporate divestment from regional megaprojects is also accelerating. French energy major TotalEnergies is finalizing the transfer of its 10% equity stake in the Arctic LNG 2 development to Nordline, a subsidiary of the domestic gas producer Novatek. On the domestic retail front, corporate disputes are escalating, with Russian financial institution Bank Rossiya formally seeking the bankruptcy of the regional gas station operator EuroTrans through the arbitration courts.

Armenia

The structural elevation of Brent crude beyond $101 per barrel severely impacts Armenia’s macroeconomic stability. Such extreme global inflation directly inflates international market price assessments for all imported hydrocarbons, substantially increasing wholesale procurement costs for independent domestic traders amidst a deepening global logistics crisis.

To mitigate this severe external pressure, the republic remains critically reliant on the internal stability of the EAEU. The proposed six-month extension of Russia’s gasoline export ban serves as a vital safeguard designed to cool internal wholesale prices across the region. Provided that impending European Union sanctions against Belarusian refineries do not trigger artificial supply deficits within the bloc, these administrative controls in Moscow will secure reliable fuel quotas for Armenian importers, thereby shielding local retail stations from catastrophic petrol and diesel price spikes.
