Moscow cuts off natural gas supplies to Armenia

Gazprom Armenia announced a prolonged suspension of natural gas deliveries to Armenia, days after Yerevan declared plans to reduce energy reliance on Russia. Concurrently, the US Congress passed sweeping sanctions against Russia and Iran, while Kpler estimated global oil production losses at 8.5 million barrels per day.

The US House of Representatives passed the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act by a 262–159 vote, sending the bill to President Donald Trump. On Middle East supply routes, China pressed Iran to help rein in Houthi militants after fighters seized a Red Sea island, threatening 4% of global oil exports. Energy analytics firm Kpler estimated 8.5 million barrels per day of global oil production has been lost during the ongoing conflict, aggravating a severe diesel shortage. In Europe, French utility EDF warned that UK household energy bills could jump 25% to 30% in early 2027 due to high gas prices. Meanwhile, International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol stated in Seoul that global electricity demand is growing three times faster than overall energy demand.

Russia & CIS

Gazprom Armenia announced a prolonged shutdown of natural gas supplies to Armenia, which relied on Russia for 82% of its gas imports in 2025. Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu stated that Moscow will not finance Armenia’s European integration, emphasizing that Armenia’s economy expanded nearly threefold during ten years in the EAEU. In maritime logistics, Russian seaborne oil product exports rose 16.4% in August to 4.57 million metric tons, according to Reuters data. Domestically, Ukrainian drones struck the 300,000-barrel-per-day Yaroslavl refinery co-owned by Rosneft and Gazprom Neft, while Moscow Region police logistics chief Lieutenant Colonel Gennady Peshkov was arrested for fuel embezzlement.

Armenia

Gazprom Armenia suspended natural gas deliveries across the republic, following Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s announcement to diversify gas imports away from Russia, which supplied 82% of domestic consumption in 2025. Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu warned that European alignment brings economic consequences, noting Armenia’s growth within the EAEU. On nuclear education, Armenian engineering students advanced to the Global HackAtom competition finals at Russia’s Beloyarsk NPP. Despite the gas cutoff, retail petrol and diesel prices remain supported by long-term reserve mechanisms under the EAEU, shielding consumers from extreme shocks recorded by international market price assessments.
