United States Threatens Iran Over Red Sea Attacks

As geopolitical tensions escalate with direct warnings of military retaliation in the Middle East, Asian nations are aggressively expanding their natural gas infrastructure. Meanwhile, targeted military strikes continue to disrupt physical fuel logistics across Eastern European ports.

Global market

Following recent strikes on commercial tankers in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, United States President Donald Trump issued a direct warning to Iran, threatening major military punishment and holding the nation responsible for the actions of its proxy forces. In Asia, Cambodia’s Energy Minister Keo Rottanak announced that global suppliers from the United States, Australia, and Canada are targeting the country as a new market for its inaugural liquefied natural gas power station, which will supplement a grid currently reliant on 63% renewable energy.

Concurrently, Chinese buyers resumed commercial re-exports, highlighted by the vessel Maran Gas Posidonia loading 67,695 metric tons of liquefied natural gas amid favorable spot pricing. At the port of Antwerp-Bruges, second-quarter bunker sales remained robust at 2 million metric tons, even as biofuel volumes plummeted 36% year-on-year to 27,000 metric tons.

Russia & CIS

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed executing targeted overnight strikes against fuel and lubricant reservoirs, military infrastructure, and a dry cargo vessel across the Ukrainian ports of Odessa, Izmail, and Mykolaiv. Regional power grids also suffered severe damage, with an explosion in Chernihiv leaving 150,000 subscribers without electricity.

In the corporate sector, Novatek, the largest independent Russian gas producer, reported a 3.1% decline in its first-half net profit, which fell to 218.7 billion rubles. Meanwhile, to ease local retail distribution constraints, authorities in the Penza region officially authorized the sale of gasoline into portable canisters, strictly limiting volumes to 20 liters per transaction at domestic fueling stations.

Armenia

With global crude markets severely disrupted by maritime conflicts, independent Armenian fuel importers face structurally elevated international market price assessments for wholesale hydrocarbon procurement. This external inflationary pressure is compounded by shifting regulatory dynamics within the EAEU.

Effective July 27, Russian regulatory agencies will impose restrictions on the import of Armenian dairy products, citing sanitary violations and the utilization of raw materials sourced from outside the economic bloc. Furthermore, a massive systemic grid failure recently left neighboring Georgia entirely without electricity. For Armenia, this regional blackout underscores the critical strategic necessity of maintaining resilient domestic baseload generation at the nuclear plant and securing robust energy interconnectivity to shield the republic from cascading regional vulnerabilities.
