EAEU warns of steep gas price surge for Armenia

The Eurasian Intergovernmental Council warned that Armenia’s potential exit from the EAEU would trigger a 69% surge in natural gas import costs and a 15.6% drop in national GDP. Meanwhile, France secured 200,000 tons of monthly diesel supplies from Gulf nations, and Brent crude reached $111.2 per barrel.

Global market

French President Emmanuel Macron secured agreements with the UAE and Bahrain for 200,000 tons of monthly diesel supplies (100,000 tons from each country) to alleviate domestic fuel shortages. Amid regional gas disruptions, global seaborne coal trade rebounded by 3% in January–September 2026, reversing a 4% decline in 2025, according to IG research. Asian coal prices reached three-year highs as Indonesian exports faced government quotas and weather disruptions. In critical minerals, BloombergNEF estimated that $332 billion in new copper mine investments is needed by 2050 to prevent deficits. Furthermore, 76% of voters in Alberta chose to remain in Canada during Monday’s historic referendum.

Russia & CIS

Brent crude futures rose 2.2% to $111.2 per barrel on ICE, driven by Middle Eastern supply concerns. On the diplomatic front, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged serious bilateral tension with Kyiv stemming from Russian diesel deliveries and Ukrainian strikes on energy infrastructure. In corporate developments, an Amsterdam court ordered Dutch bank ING to maintain banking services for Gazprom International Projects B.V., reversing a planned account closure. Meanwhile, Gazprom Neft and Tatneft announced plans to expand industrial robotics, and the Netherlands reached its minimum winter gas storage target.

Armenia

An Eurasian Intergovernmental Council report projected a 69% increase in gas import prices for Armenia should the country exit the EAEU, alongside a 15.6% GDP decline and a 55% drop in EAEU trade turnover. Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Alexey Overchuk noted that EAEU members are continuing negotiations on a unified oil and petroleum products market, emphasizing that Russian supplies remain the most cost-effective. Despite these projections, retail prices for petrol, diesel, and compressed natural gas in Armenia remain stable. Full-capacity generation at the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant and Russian gas imports continue under EAEU framework agreements, shielding consumers from volatility in international market price assessments.
