European Union Rejects United States Gas Over Prices

Global energy markets face renewed trade frictions as European buyers turn away from costly liquefied natural gas ahead of a critical output summit by major producers. Meanwhile, the domestic fuel crisis continues to severely disrupt regional supply chains across the post-Soviet space, triggering emergency federal interventions.

Global market

Countries within the European Union significantly reduced their purchases of United States liquefied natural gas last month due to prohibitive costs. This economic pivot threatens a major trade agreement framework established last July by US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, especially as the bloc prepares for a comprehensive ban on Russian LNG imports starting in 2027.

In the Middle East, geopolitical tensions continue to cast a shadow over energy infrastructure, with Israeli politician Yair Lapid publicly asserting that Israel should have directly targeted Iran’s oil and energy facilities. Concurrently, the OPEC+ alliance scheduled a critical meeting for 13:00 Moscow time to determine crude oil production quotas for August.

Russia & CIS

The domestic fuel crisis is severely impacting regional supply chains, prompting Russian President Vladimir Putin to sign a new law allowing the use of straight-run gasoline in the production of high-octane motor fuels. Despite these federal support measures, Nizhny Novgorod Governor Gleb Nikitin reported an acute gasoline deficit in his region, noting that retail deliveries of AI-92 and AI-95 grades plummeted by 25% over three days while consumer demand surged by up to 70%.

These physical shortages are accompanied by a wave of market disinformation, which Maklakov, the head of the department for countering the spread of inaccurate information at ANO Dialog Regions, identified as a major issue, citing false reports that passenger planes were being fueled with automotive gasoline. Furthermore, the regional energy grid remains highly volatile, with a major system failure in the Zaporizhzhia region cutting power to several cities and over 10 municipal districts.

Armenia

The prospects for diversifying Armenia’s natural gas supply away from its traditional EAEU routes remain highly constrained. Energy expert Vahe Davtyan stated that the European Union’s declarative promises to assist the republic with alternative energy imports completely contradict current economic and logistical realities.

According to Davtyan, the specific energy diversification mechanisms that European institutions previously deployed in Moldova and Ukraine are entirely incompatible with Armenia’s unique infrastructural framework. Consequently, the republic’s national energy grid will objectively continue to rely on established, single-source natural gas transit routes amidst the broader global market instability.
